How to make a folder icon

Posted by Aayush at 10:59 PM
You can always download a fancy icon maker from the internet and make a icon from your picture, but what if you want to make a icon without using any sorts of extra softwares? I am going to teach you how to make a windows folder icon using a single and powerful native tool: Paint.
How to make a icon?
  • Go ahead and fireup MSPaint. How to start paint?
  • Open up the picture that you want to convert into icon.
  • Go to File>"Save As" and select the place where you want to save it.
  • On the filename section, change the file name into 'icon.ico' and "Save as type" into '24-bit Bitmap'
  • Press Save and you are done.
  • If you are on Vista, you might have to rename the file again into 'icon.ico' again. Watch the video.
How to implement the icon on a folder?
  • Now right click on the folder that you cant to change and select "Properties"
  • Go to "Customize" tab and then select "Change Icon"
  • Browse to the place where you saved the icon file and select it. Press OK and then VOILA!You are done.

Just remember never to delete or change to position of the 'icon.ico'.
